We have a once-in-a-lifetime chance to change our country and build a truly progressive Democratic Party. In the great tradition of people like Paul Wellstone, I have worked my entire adult life for the cause of economic justice and civil rights so that we—our family, our children and our friends—can live in a healthy, safe, and morally just society.

We believe in a party that reflects principles and values that support important core ideals such as single-payer health care, a healthy environment, the right to belong to a union, and marriage equality.

You can find out more about our movement by clicking on the issues below. Please do contact us with feedback and ideas as we move forward together.

  • Jonathan’s broad philosophy is embodied in three principles:
    1. Everyone must be at the table
    2. Everybody has to agree to a ceasefire but you can’t ask anyone to give up weapons until they are ready to
    3. You can’t ask people to give up their dreams

  • War and PeaceThe majority in Congress in the past two elections has been elected to end wars. If you elect me I will put your money where my mouth is. I will vote against funding to support the continuation of foreign occupations. I will oppose any new wars of aggression.

  • AfghanistanJonathan believes that the American military intervention in Afghanistan is a repeat of the calamity that we witnessed in Iraq—complete with all the death, destruction and astounding waste of resources better spent on human needs.

  • HealthcareI have supported a single-payer, "Medicare For All" for a long time. It is the best solution to our health care crisis, economically and morally. We are the richest nation on earth but 48 million people do not have health care, and millions more are paying obscene prices for inadequate health care. That’s a moral scandal: families are making choices between paying for health care and putting food on the table.

  • The EconomyNew Rules for the Economy

We are at a historic moment in this country. We are living through an economic crisis that, by some measures, has not been seen in a century. Trillions of dollars in wealth have evaporated, hundreds of thousands of jobs disappeared and New Yorkers face an uncertain economic future.

  • educationJonathan believes we have a crisis in education. He understands why parents are worried about the future of their children. But, Jonathan believes that the solution is to strengthen our public education system, not undermine it with “free market” slogans like testing and “choice”.

  • Democracy At WorkFor at least half our waking hours, New Yorkers and the rest of the American people live in a dictatorship. At home or in public places, we enjoy freedoms and liberties envied by most people around the world: freedom of speech, freedom of assembly, and freedom of association.

  • Paying a Fair ShareWe Have Plenty of Money -- We don’t have to cut programs. We don’t have to delay national health care. We don’t have to stall on investments in infrastructure to “green” our economy. We don’t have to skimp on aid to states and cities. We don’t have to attack government workers’ pensions.

  • Real Trade, Not Corporate TradeHere is what our campaign believes: an economy should benefit people first, not corporations. We’ve had too many trade agreements and economic policies that make rules for the benefit of corporations, not people. That must end.

Our campaign is for a world where the rules of the economy keep the power in the hands of people who are most affected by decisions, not rootless corporations with no allegiance to place, other than to the place with the lowest wages and least environmental restrictions.

  • Protecting Our CommunitiesOur communities have been under siege from powerful corporate interests that want to take our land and our homes away just for profit, without regard to basic rights. Jonathan will not let that happen anymore. Here are two examples.

  • Federal Reserve: Time For A ChangeThe Federal Reserve Board bears primary responsibility for the financial crisis on 2008. The Fed's then-Chairman Alan Greenspan did nothing to stop the housing bubble--and, in fact, encouraged it. But, the larger question is: why does the Federal Reserve Board operate in secret, with vast powers that are contrary to our basic ideas of a democracy?

  • Civil Rights for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender AmericansJonathan was an early and immediate endorser of the Dallas Principles.

Jonathan has always been in favor of equal civil rights for all Americans without exception. Lesbian and gay couples are without the 700+ rights and responsibilities that New York confers on married couples as soon as they say, "I do." Lesbian and gay couples should have the freedom to marry.

  • Energy and the EnvironmentI have been an environmentalist for my entire life, starting when I was in grade school passing out flyers for the Sierra Club.

I have three basic principles that guide me:

  • ImmigrationImmigrants are the heart and soul of our state, and our nation. The people of New York have a proud history and strong tradition of immigration. We understand that recent immigrants, just as the generations who came before, want what all Americans want: healthy and happy families, safe communities, better opportunities for their children, and a chance at the American Dream.

  • Womens Rights and the Right to ChooseJonathan actively supports wide-ranging rights for women, not just reproductive rights.

Wage equity regardless of sex must be respected, including equal pay for comparable work (not merely for identical jobs). Workers deserve a living wage nationwide. We must end America’s futile and destructive attempts to protect our jobs - including so many service jobs now held by low-paid women - by competing with the pay scales of the world’s poorest.

  • MarijuanaI support the position of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML) that, "When cannabis(marijuana) is enjoyed responsibly, subjecting users to harsh criminal and civil penalties provides no public benefit and causes terrible injustices. For reasons of public safety, public health, economics and justice, the prohibition laws should be repealed to the extent that they criminalize responsible cannabis use."

  • Death PenaltyJonathan is, and always has been, against the death penalty because it is inhumane, unfair and arbitrary. Inhumane, because we should not take the lives of humans beings. Unfair, because almost all the people on death row could not afford to hire their own attorney and received poor representation; if they could have afforded proper legal counsel, the death penalty would probably not have been imposed. Arbitrary, because the race of the defendant and the victim often determines whether the prosecution will seek the death penalty and whether the jury will impose a death sentence.

  • Election ReformCampaign Finance Reform

The escalating cost of political campaigns is linked to the need to pay for television advertising, which is usually more than 55% of the cost of a campaign. These costs are staggering. The continuing requirement to raise funds for these campaigns results in reliance on affluent donors or organizations which are able to contribute large amounts of funds. While individual's contributions are limited to $2,300/per election cycle per candidate, there is no limit to contributions to PAC's, or to national organizations such as political parties, which can then run ads for their candidates.
